Here at The Trent Schools, we receive many questions about our program. Below are the most common. If there is something else you'd like to ask, please free free to email us at: admissions@theschools.com
Is homeschooling right for you?
Homeschooling provides a safe, structured environment where your child benefits from individual supervision, guidance, and a trusting relationship with his or her teacher - you!
Are you able to work with your child 2-3 hours a day? Then you can do this. Your home is considered a certified state school with you as the teacher in charge of your child's education.
Here at Trent, we are constantly receiving positive feedback. We hear time and time again that our program, and the homeschooling experience, offers so many opportunities and advantages over traditional public or private school settings. Some examples are:
• Each student can work free of distraction in a safe environment. There are many cases when home schooling can solve difficult situations. From electronic distractions to classroom bullies to changes in school policies, home schooling provides each student a sense of well-being. That allows them to focus on their work and advance their interests.
• Our coursework can be adjusted according to your child's individual needs. Do they need more help in reading? Or more time focused on science? Or are they advanced in math? It’s easy to make adjustments where your child needs it most.
• Providing every student the gift of time. Time to develop critical thinking skills. Time to revisit concepts as often as necessary. Time to explore their interests in fine arts, music, sports or technology. And time to interact with the local community and its citizens. These essential attributes are all building blocks for becoming confident and responsible young adults.
Making the choice to homeschool is an important and personal one. It requires you to gather as much information as possible from a variety of sources. We are grateful and honored that you are considering The Trent Schools. With us, you’ll be partnering with a highly qualified and dedicated staff that upholds a trusted school philosophy and will be there to assist you every step of the way.
How do I teach home school? Is it difficult and am I qualified?
If you are new to teaching and new to homeschooling, you are not alone!
The good news is, you can do this. If you have a high diploma or equivalent, you have the skills and requirements needed to teach your child.
The most effective approach is to learn along with them. If you read the lessons before tackling them together, you’ll find the process easy and even fun! Our program is designed to be simple and effective.
Our online staff have many great tips and techniques to help you as well. They’re happy to share ideas and work with you and your children’s specific needs. Here are a few tips that we’ve found useful:
• Create a schedule that works for your family. Your school can start when everyone is focused, whether that’s morning, afternoon or evening.
• Spend around 2-4 hours a day on school work. This maximizes learning and attention without burn-out.
• Build in time for physical activities. Recess is great for all ages!
• One of our favorites is take a field trip. The park, a family member’s house, or the post office might be the perfect place for a lesson. Consider how a simple visit to the grocery store might provide hands-on, real-life practice for addition, subtraction, estimation, or making change.
How does this program work?
The Trent Schools’ program is based on a traditional home schooling model where an at-home teacher (usually a parent or sometimes a tutor) works daily with the student. We provide the lessons and tests for each grade level. All the lessons and tests are sent electronically, so all you need is a computer connected to the internet.
What is involved in changing from public school to home school? Can we return to public school?
Switching from public school to homeschooling is in most cases a simple process. Each state has a homeschooling statute with regulations that families should follow. As long as you adhere to these regulations in your state, the state board of education and local school districts are required by law to consider your homeschool a completely equal alternative to public school.
You may need to fill out paperwork or simply send a letter to your school district, it will depend on the state. If you live outside of the United States this process is similar, but again will be dependent on each specific location.
PLEASE NOTE: if you'd like any assistance with understanding the homeschooling laws where you live, we are happy to help! We have a lot of experience in this area. We can walk you through anything that seems daunting or difficult to understand. Please contact us at admissions@theschools.com to take advantage of this complementary/free service for your family.
If you ever decide to return to public school, they are obligated to re-admit your child if you’ve followed your state or country’s homeschooling statutes. Easy as that!
How long will it take a student to complete one grade level?
Typically it takes between six and nine months for a student to complete one grade level. However, families who homeschool with Trent have a wide variety of needs, schedules and learning paces, so this is approximate and is different for each student.
When during the year can I enroll my child?
Anytime!
Since Trent is not tied to the traditional school year calendar, a student may begin school on any day of the year. Not only can they start lessons when they’re ready, they can also stop periodically as needed. For instance, when taking a family vacation, attending an unexpected event or having a summer break.
Do I need to buy anything? Are there extra costs? Any hidden fees?
No. There are no additional fees. We do not sell books, workbooks, textbooks, supplies, CDs or DVDs. Everything your student needs to complete each grade is included in our tuition. There are no hidden costs and no extra charges. EVER!
What are my state’s laws regarding home schooling?
In the US, each state has its own rules and regulations regarding homeschooling. Most states have homeschool friendly laws. A few states have more challenging regulations. However, even in these locations, homeschooling is very possible if you take the right steps.
Our advice concerning local barriers to homeschooling is to know your state's laws and regulations. Do this before you contact your local school district because many school districts will ask for information that isn’t even required by the state, or won't require much at all! It’s a good idea to be knowledgeable about the details.

We strongly encourage every homeschooling family to check out The Home School Legal Defense Association(HSLDA). The HSLDA is a helpful advocacy organization for homeschooling. It is the best place to go to check on your state's current home-schooling laws and regulations.
Is Trent an accredited homeschooling institution?
Your home is the school while we provide your lessons and tests. If your home follows your state or country’s homeschooling laws, your home school will be given the same accreditation as any other public or private school. So – yes!
Questions about accreditation are among our most common although it is not always easy to find clear and straight-forward answers. Please let us know if you would like specific information about your state's homeschooling laws. Just send us a message using the contact form below.
What's a transcript? Do I need one? How do I get one sent?
Transcripts are official grade reports that are sent directly from one educational institution to another. The most common request for official transcripts come from universities and colleges who are considering accepting a student.
Following the completion of a school year with Trent, we are happy to send your report card at no cost. If you are in need of an official transcripts, there is a fee of $15 per transcript.
Please contact us using the contact form below to request a transcript and to give details about where it should be sent.
Which grade level should my child be enrolled in?
If you are unsure of the correct grade level for your child, Trent offers a placement exam for incoming students. The placement exam is completely optional and is intended for students who have either not attended a public or private school, have been home-schooled, or have not attended any school within the past year.
The optional placement exam is taken online and submitted electronically. A $25 fee must accompany the completed exam, which can be paid by debit/credit card through PayPal, check or money order. Once we receive both, the exam will be graded and the results promptly sent to you.
If you have any questions about placement tests, please contact us using the message submission form below
Is Trent a Virtual School?
No. We are not a virtual school or a virtual classroom. There are no video conferences or online check-ins. We are a homeschooling curriculum provider. We provide the lessons and tests so the at-home teacher can administer a high quality, personalized education for their child.
My child has a learning disability. Will Trent's curriculum suit their particular learning speed?
Home schooling is perfect for students with learning disabilities. Our curriculum can easily be adjusted as needed. Lessons can be completed at the student’s pace. Focusing on school work tends to be easier from the comfort of home. And whenever a student needs assistance, all they have to do is turn to their teacher sitting right nearby!
Does Trent accept expatriate and international students?
Yes! We work with students around the world, many of whom are expatriates or English speakers. We also work with students who don’t speak English who elect to use an Internet translator to convert their lessons.
Our students receive a college preparatory education similar to one they would receive if attending a quality boarding school in The United States. The emphasis on history and government is decidedly American. The spelling and grammar used in lessons are those accepted as correct and proper in The United States.
All students successfully completing the twelfth grade receive a diploma on behalf of their homeschool, and their grade records are kept on permanent file at The Trent Schools. Upon request, copies of grade transcripts can be sent anywhere in the world.
Do colleges and universities accept homeschooled students?
Yes! If you are following your state's laws regarding homeschooling, colleges and universities will treat your application for admission exactly the same as those from any public or private school.
The Trent curriculum compares with most school districts’ college preparatory curricula and our students have no problems gaining admission to most accredited colleges and universities. In fact, most American colleges and universities have always accepted homeschooled students!
Does Trent base its lessons in any religion?
Trent Schools’ lessons do not put emphasis on any religion. However, various religious beliefs are discussed within lessons. Trent regards the teaching of religious beliefs to be the responsibility of the home, not the school.
What if my child has a career or daily obligation?
Our program works great for students with other careers or daily obligations. The flexibility of time, curriculum and interests make home schooling perfect for working students. We take pride in the range of homeschoolers that have used our program, which includes actors, musicians and athletes.
